Science has studied and proven how well music works when you practice. Here are some notable effects such as:

Listening To Music, You Will Forget About Tired, Boring Of Exercise:

A fast and powerful song will motivate you to train at a frequency 15% or higher than when you do not listen to music. The faster the rhythm, the more effective your training will be, as these types of music will help your brain process information better, deceive the pain sensations (such as hips) when practicing.

For fast tempo music players with around 120-140 bpm can improve performance better than slower tempo music players. Especially for sportsperson who enjoy medium intensity like cycling, running and jogging, listening to music will help you forget how far the destination would be but instead, the motivation music gives you.

Rhythm Helps Maintain The Speed:

For the past 20 years, Mr. Costas Karageorghis, a sports psychologist who has worked at Brunel University, UK, has studied the relationship between listening to music and the movement of the body. According to Mr. Karageorghis, there are four elements that make up the quality of movement while listening to music: the body’s reactions to melody, music, cultural impact and association.

The first two factors relate to structure of a song. The body’s response is related to the rhythm of music per minute (bpm – beats per minute) and the harmonious combination of person’s foot or heart rate. The other two factors reflect our perception of music. Those factors influence your choice of songs or singers as the background music for the exercise. Therefore, if there is synchronization between the rhythm of the music and the pace of your footsteps in one minute, the efficiency of the workout will increase.

Research was shown on Journal of Exercise Psychology and Sports recently proved the above point of view. 30 volunteers were jogging while listening to music at 125 beats per minute, they had the right to choose types of music: pop or rock. After comparing the results, it was found that volunteers who listen to music while jogging were 15% faster than those who did not listen to music. In addition, they have greater flexibility and tolerance.

The steady tempo of a song can help stimulate the motorized control area of the brain, especially with jogging, weightlifting and boxing. According to research, with regular rhythm, the body uses energy more efficiently, maintaining stable speed for better muscle growth.

Different Types Of Music Have Different Effects:

To further clarify the relationship between rhythm of a song and movement of the body, scientists at John Moores University, UK, conducted a study with a group of bicyclists had listened to a song with three different rhythm while cycling. Initially, the scientists let them listen to the music with normal tempo, gradually increased and then reduced the tempo speed by about 10%. Of course, the volunteers did not know about this change.

Finally, the scientists concluded, the increase of rhythm made the participants increase the speed between each cycling stroke. Conversely, when the rhythm was reduced, their speed also decreased.

Therefore, choosing the type of music while playing sport is very important for your health. When you’re at the rehearsal stage, you should choose a slow, normal rhythm and then gradually increase and decrease at the end of the workout.

In addition, Mr. Karageorghis found that when our heart rate is “working” at a rate of 30-70%, we should choose music with the rhythm about 90-120 bpm. When your heart rate is 70-80%, you need to choose the song with rhythm between 120 and 150bpm. If the heart rate is above 80%, this is the highest peak and we should gradually reduce the rhythm of the music.
